Stanford Hall 2006

When we were asked to put on a display to celebrate 30 years since the Golf GTI came onto the scene, we pulled out all the stops!

Nothing was good enough for us except showing off immaculate cars representing each marque of the legendary GTI, so who better to ask than VW UK to lend us theirs. Apparently, they've not done this before, but we pulled off this coup, and proudly displayed on our stand was a shiny example of each. (Yes, even the much maligned Mk3! Doesn't anyone like this car besides me?) Thanks to Nikki et al at VW UK press office for the loan.

And just to add a little something very special - we added a little Golf that was very special - this is the oldest Mk1 Golf GTI known to exist. Just look at this and see if it doesn't get the juices flowing! Really nice owner, too - thanks very much, Rajan.

VW UK press cars - and an illustrated timeline. Can you remember what you were doing in 1976? (Were you even
born in 1976?)

The iconic Mk1 Golf GTI - the first of this legendary breed of hot hatches. The original - and some would say still
- the best! First hit the streets in 1976 over there. 1979 saw them over here in right-hand drive guise.

The Mk2 Golf GTI - the second incarnation of this hot hatches in 1983. An improvement on the original? (Or is that blasphemy?)

Spawned variations on the theme, including the 16 valve, then wild G60 and the Rallye four-wheel drive. And the
rather quaint Golf Country!

Mk3 Golf GTI - c'mon - how can you not like this? Especially in it's 16-valve guise? When VW delivered the cars
and unloaded them from the trailer onto the grass, then drove away - there was a mad rush to grab-a-Golf to
drive up to our patch. Sadly, the Mk3 was left behind on the grass on its own

Golf GTI Mk 4 - impressive in its turbo version.

Golf Mk5 in 2005. Some would have it that it is the only true successor of the Mk1 in terms of performance and excitement!

And here is the star of the show! If you don't have an overpowering urge to want to own this little beauty, then
there must be something seriously wrong with you!

When asked, Rajan couldn't even begin to put a value on this legend! We're betting it's worth considerably more
than it cost new.
